Decide first how many nights you can spend away from Tokyo. That sets which areas fit and where you sleep. Each trip page then compares rail and car and shows what it takes to make the plan work.
Train and taxi, or a rental car
Both trips come in both versions. They are not the same route in a different vehicle: the places that fit and where you can sleep change.
Train and taxi
No driving. You travel on the limited express and the Minobu Line, and the day is built around the train times.
Rental car
Take the limited express to Kofu and rent a car there. More places fit than by train, and you have more choice of lodging.
Where you go
Three areas of Yamanashi
The locations are not in one walkable town. They sit in three areas linked by infrequent trains and mountain roads, which is why the length of the trip and the way you travel matter.
Episode 1
Lake Motosu
Koan on the lakeshore, and the view of Mt. Fuji printed on the old ¥1,000 note. The lake lies over a mountain road from Shimobe-Onsen.
Everyday life
Minobu and Kai-Tokiwa
Shonin-dori in front of Minobu Station, and the school model site near Kai-Tokiwa Station. Both lie along the Minobu Line, where trains are few.
The club’s day out
Yamanashi City
Fuefukigawa Fruit Park, Hottarakashi Onsen and a fruit parfait by the station. The easiest of the three to reach by train.
Before you go
What you need to prepare depends on whether you go by train or by car. The details are in each guide.
- By train, the taxi to Lake Motosu has to be booked
- You cannot find a taxi waiting out there, so the rail plans are built on a taxi booked before you go.
- By car, check that your licence is valid in Japan
- Driving on a licence from abroad comes with conditions, and some of the paperwork can only be arranged before you leave home. Rental car guide
- Past Kofu, tickets work differently from Tokyo
- South of Kofu the Minobu Line belongs to JR Central, and IC cards and rail passes do not always work the way they do around Tokyo. Trains and tickets guide

What we check
We check what decides whether a trip works: train times and fares, which taxi legs must be booked, how far the lodging is from the station, what you need to drive, and the days places are closed. For times, fares and opening hours we check who keeps each listing and how recent it is, and we prefer the operator’s own information. The check date is shown on every page. Connections and walking routes are being confirmed on the ground. Anything we could not confirm is marked as unconfirmed, not guessed. We do not use screenshots from the anime; photographs are our own, apart from a few licensed images credited where they appear.
