Three days without a car

This is not the driving route with the car removed. Lake Shibire comes off, the Minobu station front comes back on, and the Minobu Line itself becomes part of the trip rather than something to endure. Booked taxis fill the gap the railway leaves.

What to book before you go

  1. Limited express seats

    Every seat on the Kaiji is reserved. Book the 8:30 from Shinjuku on Day 1 and the 16:11 from Kofu on Day 3. The Fujikawa on Day 2 has unreserved cars.

  2. Night 1: a hotel by Kofu Station

    You check in at about 15:00, and the next morning’s train to Minobu leaves from Kofu.

    Shimobe-Onsen has no convenience store and its restaurants close early, so book a rate with dinner or check restaurant hours first.

  4. A day-camp booking at Koan

    You need a camping or day-camping booking to enter the lakeside at Koan. Day camping ends at 17:00.

  5. Four taxi rides

    Day 1: Yamanashishi Station to Hottarakashi Onsen at 10:50, and Fruit Park back to the station at 13:50. Day 3: Shimobe-Onsen to Koan at 8:30 and back at 11:50, booked together with the same company. You cannot hail a taxi out there.

Day 1

The club’s day out

The club’s first camp trip from episodes 4 and 5, starting at the same station the club does. That is why you stay on past Kofu and get off at Yamanashishi: a parfait by the station, a taxi up to Hottarakashi Onsen, then the walk back down to Fuefukigawa Fruit Park — the stretch the club covers on foot — and a second booked taxi back to the station.

    About ten minutes up the hill, roughly ¥2,400 one way. Reserve the 10:50 pick-up before you travel; you cannot count on finding a taxi waiting at the station.

    The current city bus timetable has a 14:53 departure from the park, too late for the 14:29 train, so you take a taxi for this part. Agree the exact pick-up point with the company in advance.

    Allow 15 minutes for the ride. Agree the timing and fare with the taxi company in advance.

    Buy paper tickets for the Minobu Line

    Buy them here while you are at a staffed station. Minobu, Kai-Tokiwa and Shimobe-Onsen, the Minobu Line stations on this trip, do not accept IC cards, and IC travel across the JR East / JR Central boundary is not allowed.

Day 2

Rin and Nadeshiko’s Yamanashi

Minobu Station, where the club gets off after school in episode 8, and Shonin-dori, the street of tiled roofs that runs out from the station; then the club’s school near Kai-Tokiwa Station in the afternoon. The limited express down the Fuji River valley, an unhurried morning in front of Minobu Station, and Shimobe-Onsen at the end of the day.

    About 51 minutes. Unlike the Chuo Line expresses this one has unreserved cars, and it saves about 58 minutes over the local train.

    Thirty seconds from the ticket gate. Buy the manju, then eat them looking at the river. Closed on Wednesdays and sells out; ¥80 each as of the December 2025 price revision.

    Shiitake rice sets and handmade yuba soba. The gap before the next train is long enough to eat properly.

    Walk up the slope the characters use, look at the gate and the noticeboard, then wander the village. The grounds are closed to visitors; everything is seen from outside.

    A 30-minute downhill walk, or about five minutes by taxi. There is also a 16:06 local train, one stop, if your bags are heavy.

    Kaiseki with local beef and river fish, depending on your room rate. No convenience store here and restaurants close early, so book a rate with dinner or check opening hours first.

Day 3

Back to where it started

Lake Motosu, where Rin and Nadeshiko meet in episode 1. A booked taxi over the same pass Rin rides up, two and a half hours at the lake, then lunch in front of Shimobe-Onsen Station before the slow ride back up the valley.

    About 18 km over Route 300, roughly 40 minutes. Book the outward and return rides together, with the same taxi company, before you travel.

    Two and a half hours: the shore, the Mt. Fuji view from the old ¥1,000 note, and curry noodles from the shop terrace.

    Back over the pass to the station forecourt. This is the taxi people forget to book: confirm the pick-up time when you book the outward trip.

    Sakura shrimp kakiage donburi at the station-front diner, one minute from the platform. Closed on Wednesdays; some listings also give the second Tuesday. Payment methods change, so check on the day.

    Pick your bags up from the hotel and walk to the platform. Everything here is within a minute.

    Shimobe-Onsen to Kofu

    Local train up the valley, about 1 hr 20 min. Slow, and the best window seat of the trip.

    Every seat is reserved. Arrives 17:54 on Saturdays and holidays. Confirm your own date before booking.

What this version drops: Lake Shibire

Lake Shibire has no practical public transport link, and reaching it would mean another booked taxi and a long detour on the day that is already tightest. Instead of forcing it in, this version spends that time in front of Minobu Station — the part the 2-day public transport route has to skip.

Before you set off

  • You must book four taxi rides ahead: up to Hottarakashi Onsen and back from Fruit Park on Day 1, and the round trip to Lake Motosu on Day 3. You cannot hail one out there.
  • IC cards do not work at Shimobe-Onsen or Kai-Tokiwa. Buy paper tickets for anything south of Kofu.
  • Trains on the Minobu Line run once or twice an hour. Missing one changes the whole afternoon, so the plan leaves spare time between connections.
  • Travel with a small bag. Unstaffed stations, footbridges and one-person-operated trains do not suit a large suitcase.
