Coming back through Shinjuku
Both of our trips start and end at Shinjuku. Leave the case there.

The short answer
On both trips you change between trains, buses, a ropeway and a boat, and walk from the pier to the sights. Travel with a small bag. Where the suitcase goes depends on where you go after Hakone.
Going on somewhere else
Heading on to Kyoto, Osaka or the airport? Bring the case, and let Hakone’s luggage service carry it to your hotel.

Leaving it in Shinjuku
The Romancecar leaves from Odakyu’s own station at Shinjuku, not from the JR platforms. Choose somewhere that is open before the 8:00 train and still open when you get back: 19:45 on the day trip (weekdays 20:06) and 18:25 on the 2-day trip.

Hakone’s luggage service
Hakone Tozan Bus runs a service that carries bags between Hakone-Yumoto Station and partner hotels, so you can ride the ropeway and the boat without the case. All five hotels in our stay guide were on its partner list when we checked.
Book, or go to the counter
Book on the service’s website, or hand bags in at the counter on the day. Online bookings for the same day close at 11:30.
Day 1: at Hakone-Yumoto
Hand it in at the counter in Hakone-Yumoto Station, 8:30-12:00. It reaches your hotel from 15:00. On the 2-day trip you are at the station from 9:24.
Day 2: at your hotel
Hand it in at the hotel by 10:00, and collect it at Hakone-Yumoto Station, 13:30-18:30. On the 2-day trip you are back at the station from about 15:00.

On the day trip there is no hotel to send the case to. If you have to carry it, the Hakone Ropeway stations have coin lockers, and their offices keep bags for ¥1,000, according to Hakone Navi.
