Why it matters for anime fans

Ube is the hometown of Hideaki Anno, the director behind Evangelion, and JR Ube-Shinkawa Station is one of the models for the last scene of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. The city has held a citywide Evangelion event every year since 2021.

What you can see and do

  • Ube-Shinkawa Station. The station, platform and streets around it from the film, worth seeing even outside the event.
  • The 2026 event display at the station. The new artwork puts five characters in front of the “Eva’s Hand” sculpture at the station, with Ube Line trains behind them.
  • Unit-01 at the airport. A large statue in the departure lobby at Yamaguchi Ube Airport. Fly in and it is the first Evangelion stop of your trip.
  • Yoko Takahashi on 1 November. The singer on the stage of the Ube Festival, just after the event opens.
  • The stamp rally and food fair. Coming, but not detailed yet.

Tickets, booking and limited items

The station display and the airport statue are free to see and need no booking. For the stamp rally and food fair, go by the city’s announcements as they come out.

Getting there

From Tokyo, the simplest way is a direct flight from Haneda (HND) to Yamaguchi Ube (UBJ). Fares and times change by date, so check them when you book.

From the airport, a Ube City bus runs to Ube-Shinkawa Station in about 17 min, ¥310, from stop 2. Its times follow the flights, so check the airport’s bus page (Japanese) for your date.

By shinkansen, change at Shin-Yamaguchi to the JR Ube Line for Ube-Shinkawa. From Hiroshima, Fukuoka or the Kansai area, this can be easier than flying.

Where to stay

Stay by Ube-Shinkawa Station. The station is the place from the film and the event’s base, and the airport bus stops there.
