Which night you are booking
On the two-day route there is one night, and Shimobe-Onsen is the base both plans are built on. On the three-day route the first night is chosen for convenience — Kofu, Isawa-Onsen or the Fruit Park hotel — and the second is the decision that shapes the trip. Shimobe-Onsen is the standard: it is what the hour-by-hour three-day plans use, and it lets you move the lake to whichever of the two days has the better forecast. Koan puts you on the shore of Lake Motosu, but it needs a car, it fixes which day you go there, and you plan the surrounding hours yourself.
